The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation is offering full-term bursaries to undergraduate students studying Food Science and Technology at South African tertiary institutions for the 2027 academic year. SAAFoST is the professional association for food scientists, technologists, and allied professionals serving the food industry in South Africa, and its bursary programme is one of the few in the country dedicated exclusively to this field.
Bursaries are awarded on the basis of academic merit, employment equity, and demonstrated potential. The bursary covers actual tuition fees as levied by the tertiary institution, up to a maximum of R60 000 per annum, paid directly to the institution in two instalments per year. The first instalment is subject to a satisfactory final mark for the previous year of study, and the second is subject to satisfactory first semester results.
Please note that the bursary is subject to strict academic conditions. If a student terminates or interrupts their studies, fails any year or semester, or does not complete within the prescribed period, the bursary may at the Foundation’s discretion be converted into a loan repayable at the prime rate of interest. Awards are announced in March following a February review period.
Only fully completed applications submitted within the specified date will be considered. Applications from students whose registrations have not been accepted by a university will not be reviewed.
