The City of Johannesburg Municipality is offering 200 bursaries to South African youth for the 2027 academic year. The City is committed to skills development and educational opportunities not only for its own employees, but for the broader Johannesburg community, and this bursary is open exclusively to young people who permanently reside in Johannesburg.

The bursary covers tuition and registration fees, as well as prescribed books and study material, up to a value of R40 000 per academic year. It is renewable on an annual basis, subject to satisfactory academic performance. The bursary is not applicable to postgraduate qualifications, and the minimum qualification period must be at least one year.

Selection is strictly based on academic merit. It is the student’s own responsibility to seek admission to an accredited South African tertiary institution before or alongside applying for this bursary.

Requirements

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must permanently reside in Johannesburg
  • Must be pursuing or intending to pursue full-time undergraduate studies at an accredited South African tertiary institution
  • The bursary is for qualifications of no less than one year in duration
  • Postgraduate qualifications are not covered
  • Selection is strictly on academic merit

Required documents

Certified copies of the following must accompany all applications:

  • Most recent academic record
  • South African identity document
  • Proof of residency in Johannesburg (statement of Water and Lights, Rates and Taxes)
  • Parents’ proof of income, or death certificate(s), or an affidavit in cases where the student does not have one or both parents
