The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health at MUT trains students to serve as the first line of defence against disease by preventing and controlling environmental health risks and protecting public health in communities and public environments. All graduates are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and are authorised to practise as Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs) — a statutory requirement for practice in South Africa. Students study food safety, water quality, waste management, occupational health, disease surveillance, and environmental legislation, with Geography and Agricultural Science recommended as supporting subjects.

Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP) – Inspects food premises, water sources, waste facilities, and public spaces to protect community health on behalf of South African municipalities, registered with the HPCSA.
Occupational Health and Safety Officer – Develops and implements workplace health and safety programmes, conducts risk assessments, and ensures compliance with the OHS Act in mining, manufacturing, and construction.
Food Safety Officer – Audits food processing facilities and enforces compliance with food safety regulations for the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries or SABS.
Disease Surveillance Officer – Monitors disease trends and coordinates outbreak investigations for the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) or provincial health departments.
Environmental Management Inspector (EMI) – Enforces environmental legislation under NEMA and related acts for the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment or provincial environmental agencies.
