The Bachelor of Arts at Walter Sisulu University is a three-year general degree at the Mthatha campus that allows students to study three subjects in their first year before selecting two majors to develop in depth through second and third year. The majors must be traceable back to first-year level, ensuring coherent intellectual development across the degree. The programme equips students with undergraduate-level knowledge across the humanities and social sciences — including IsiXhosa, Sesotho, Geography, and History — and prepares them for specialisation at Honours level. In South Africa's diverse multilingual and multicultural society, BA graduates are valued for their critical thinking, communication, and cultural competence.

Teacher of Humanities Subjects (with PGCE) – Teach History, Geography, or Languages at secondary schools following completion of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education.
Researcher or Policy Analyst – Conduct social, cultural, or community research for academic institutions, think tanks, or government departments including the DPSA and DSAC.
Cultural and Community Development Worker – Implement language promotion, community engagement, and cultural heritage programmes for municipalities, arts councils, or provincial governments.
