The Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) is inviting people who are presently employed in the mining and minerals sector to apply for an MQA bursary for the 2027 academic year. The bursary supports employed workers who want to study towards a qualification relevant to the mining related sector, and a total of 200 bursary opportunities are available for employed bursars.
The bursary covers tuition and allowances for books only. It funds qualifications at universities, universities of technology, and TVET colleges, including trades such as Electrician, Millwright, and Boilermaker, and degrees and diplomas in engineering, geology, environmental management, and occupational health and safety. It also funds selected fourth industrial revolution qualifications such as robotics, cyber security, and renewable energy technologies.
Please note that this bursary is only for South African citizens who are already employed within the mining and minerals sector. It is not available to anyone currently on an MQA funded Internship Programme or a Work Experience (P1/P2) Programme, as this is considered double dipping.
The MQA may allocate up to 20% of the total bursary allocation to qualifications that are not listed above but which it considers necessary for the mining and minerals sector.
