The Funza Lushaka Bursary is the Department of Basic Education’s flagship programme for training new teachers. Applications for the 2027 academic year opened on 1 October 2026, and the bursary funds students studying towards an approved initial teacher education qualification, mainly the Bachelor of Education (BEd), at a public university in South Africa.
The bursary is aimed at addressing teacher shortages, so it only funds students who will specialise in subjects and school phases where teachers are needed most. Your qualification must include at least two priority subject areas. It is a full cost bursary designed to remove the main financial barriers to becoming a teacher, and it is administered through NSFAS.
Please note that Funza Lushaka comes with a service obligation. Recipients are required to teach at a public school after graduating, for the same number of years that they received funding. Applying is completely free, and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee that you will receive the bursary.
The bursary prioritises subjects and phases where teachers are most needed, including Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Technology, Computer Science, and African languages, as well as priority areas in the Foundation Phase (Grades R to 3) and Intermediate Phase (Grades 4 to 6). Priority areas can change from year to year, so always confirm the current list on the official Funza Lushaka website.
