Vulamathuba Empumelelo, the community and social development arm of Communicare, is offering bursaries for the 2025 academic year to support students residing within the Cape Metro Region (Cape Town). The bursary aims to assist economically disadvantaged students in pursuing undergraduate studies in fields identified as scarce or critical skills by the government. The bursary provides partial coverage for registration fees, tuition fees (up to R40,000), prescribed textbooks and academic materials (up to R5,000), and examination fees if applicable. Additionally, recipients will receive quarterly mentoring to support their academic journey. The bursary does not cover electronic devices, stationery, or outstanding study loans.

Requirements

  • South African citizen or holder of a Permanent Residency Permit/Work Visa
  • Communicare tenant or student from a previously marginalized community
  • Residing within the Cape Metro Region
  • Aged between 19 and 50 years
  • Completed Matric
  • Studying part-time or full-time towards an undergraduate qualification in a scarce or critical skills field
  • Accepted or provisionally accepted at a public higher education institution in South Africa (TVET College or University)
  • Proven financial need (determined by a means test)
  • Gross household income not exceeding R400,000 per annum
  • Demonstrated strong academic potential
  • Personal qualities: enthusiastic, highly driven, positive attitude, excellent communicator, team player, available to volunteer, problem solver, creative, and innovative
  • Preference given to students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and Communicare tenants in good standing
  • Students with or without disabilities are encouraged to apply
