The Department of Basic Education (DBE) is the national government department responsible for primary and secondary schooling in South Africa. Funza Lushaka is its flagship teacher training bursary, created to attract talented young people into teaching and to supply schools with qualified teachers in priority subjects and phases. The bursary is administered through NSFAS, and recipients work back their funding as teachers in public schools.
