The Bachelor of Music at the University of South Africa (Unisa) is a three-year open distance learning degree that provides students with a comprehensive music education encompassing music theory, history, composition, and musicology within a South African and global context. Unisa's BMus is one of the few distance music degrees available in South Africa, offering access to formal music education for students who cannot attend campus-based conservatories. Students develop deep theoretical and analytical music knowledge, with practical musical ability an important complementary attribute. The programme is particularly suited to music teachers, church musicians, and practising musicians who wish to formalise and deepen their theoretical and historical music knowledge. Graduates may progress to postgraduate study in music.
Admission requirements: National Senior Certificate (NSC) with Degree endorsement and at least 50% in the language of teaching and learning, or a Senior Certificate (SC) with matriculation exemption.
