The Bachelor of Arts in Journalism at UJ is a three-year degree offered through the Department of Communication and Media, a department formed by the merger of Communication and Journalism to reflect the converging landscape of modern media. The programme prepares students for careers in news reporting, broadcast media, online journalism, and multimedia storytelling in South Africa and beyond.

South Africa has a vibrant and constitutionally protected press landscape. UJ graduates enter a media sector that spans public broadcasters, independent news platforms, community radio, and digital newsrooms. Admission requires a minimum APS of 28 (excluding Life Orientation) and at least 60% in English. NCV applicants are not considered for this programme. Selection is based on academic merit.
