The Baccalaureus Musicae (BMus) at NWU Potchefstroom is the flagship four-year professional music degree that trains students to the highest standards of musical performance, composition, or music education. With an entrance requirement of a Grade 6 practical examination, the BMus is designed for students with proven musical talent seeking intensive conservatoire-level training within a university setting. Students develop mastery of their principal instrument or voice alongside advanced music theory, music history, ensemble playing, and recital performance, emerging as professional musicians capable of performing, teaching, and contributing to South Africa's classical and contemporary music sectors. The programme is complemented by NWU's Symphony Orchestra, choirs, and numerous performance ensembles.
Practical audition: Grade 6 level required

Concert Musician – Perform as a professional soloist or ensemble member at South African orchestras, opera companies, or concert series including the Cape Philharmonic or KZN Philharmonic.
Music Lecturer / Professor – Teach music performance, theory, or musicology at South African universities or conservatoires, contributing to training the next generation of South African musicians.
Composer / Arranger – Create original compositions or arrangements for South African orchestras, film and television productions, or contemporary music projects.
Opera and Theatre Musician – Perform in South African opera productions, theatre orchestras, or musical theatre companies at venues such as Artscape or the State Theatre.
Music Entrepreneur – Establish a music school, recording studio, or arts organisation in South Africa, contributing to the sustainability and growth of the local creative economy.
