The Bachelor of Arts in Translation and Linguistics at the University of Limpopo trains students in the scientific study of language and the applied practice of translation, with a specialisation in English and Northern Sotho (Sepedi). Students study phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, discourse analysis, and translation theory, developing rigorous analytical skills alongside practical competencies in professional translation and terminology work. The programme addresses South Africa's need for qualified translators who can work accurately and fluently across official language pairs, particularly for government communication, legal proceedings, and indigenous language media.

Professional Translator (English/Sepedi) – Translates government legislation, legal documents, educational materials, and public communication between English and Sepedi for national and provincial government departments, Parliament, and the media.
Court Interpreter – Provides accurate spoken interpretation between English and Sepedi (and other languages) in magistrate courts, high courts, and tribunals, a constitutionally mandated role in the South African justice system.
Terminologist – Develops and standardises terminology in Sepedi for new domains such as technology, law, and medicine, working for language boards, universities, and government translation services.
Language Policy Officer – Advises government departments and public institutions on implementation of the Use of Official Languages Act and develops language use plans for public entities.
Linguistics Researcher – Conducts academic research on Bantu language structure, language contact, and language change at universities and the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS).
