The Diploma in Community Extension at MUT trains students to improve the standard of living in rural and urban communities by motivating community participation in self-help projects, promoting food security, and effectively communicating improved household functioning by extending domestic, social, and agricultural skills into communities. The programme responds directly to South Africa's challenges of rural poverty, food insecurity, and the need for grassroots development facilitation. Graduates work closely with government departments, NGOs, and community organisations across KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.

Career Prospects

Community Development Worker – Facilitates access to government services, grants, and development programmes in disadvantaged communities on behalf of the Department of Social Development.
Agricultural Extension Officer – Advises rural households and small-scale farmers on food gardens, crop production, and livestock management to improve food security.
NGO Project Officer – Manages community development projects funded by international donors or government in the areas of food security, skills development, and livelihood support.
Family Ecology Adviser – Assists households with home economics, nutrition, health promotion, and consumer education through government extension services.
Ward Development Facilitator – Supports ward councillors and communities in the preparation and implementation of Integrated Development Plans (IDPs) at local government level.
