The Bachelor of Oral Hygiene at UKZN (Westville) is a three-year HPCSA-accredited degree that trains graduates to provide preventive oral health care and patient education to South African communities. Oral hygienists perform scaling and polishing, oral health risk assessments, and tobacco cessation counselling, working alongside dentists and dental therapists to prevent disease before it requires expensive treatment. Given South Africa's high rates of periodontal disease and limited access to dental care, oral hygienists make a meaningful difference across the country's public and private health sectors.
