The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Walter Sisulu University is a six-year medical degree at the Mthatha campus, offered since 1992, that prepares graduates with the required knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes to practise medicine in various settings. The programme uses a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and community-based approach, equipping graduates to manage diverse health problems in individuals, families, and communities. As one of a limited number of South African universities with a medical school, WSU plays a critical national role in training doctors for public service — particularly for underserved rural and peri-urban communities in the Eastern Cape and across the country.
