The Bachelor of Engineering in Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Pretoria is a four-year degree that trains graduates in the extraction, processing, and characterisation of metals and materials — critical skills for South Africa's world-leading mining and metals sector. Students study pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, physical metallurgy, materials science, and mineral processing, developing the technical knowledge to extract and refine metals from ores and to engineer new materials with desired properties. South Africa is the world's largest producer of platinum group metals, chrome, and manganese, and a major gold and coal producer — making metallurgical engineers essential to the country's economic backbone. UP's metallurgical engineering programme is ECSA-accredited and has strong links with Anglo American, Sibanye-Stillwater, and Impala Platinum.
