The Bachelor of Engineering in Mining Engineering at the University of Pretoria is a four-year degree that trains graduates to plan, design, and manage mining operations — from ore body evaluation and mine design through to extraction, safety management, and mine closure. South Africa has one of the world's most complex and deep mining sectors, producing platinum, gold, coal, iron ore, and diamonds, and mining engineers are essential to the safe and efficient operation of these mines. The programme covers rock mechanics, drilling and blasting, mine ventilation, mine design, financial evaluation, and environmental management — equipping graduates with the breadth of skills to work across surface and underground operations. The programme is ECSA-accredited and aligned with Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency requirements.
