The BEd Foundation Phase at UKZN (Edgewood) trains teachers to work with learners in Grades R to 3, the most critical years for literacy and numeracy development in South African children. The four-year degree places a strong emphasis on isiZulu alongside English, recognising the multilingual reality of KwaZulu-Natal's classrooms and the importance of mother-tongue instruction in the Foundation Phase. The programme is accredited by the South African Council for Educators (SACE) and graduates are well-prepared to teach in both urban and rural South African schools. Note that isiZulu is a specific requirement for this programme.
