The Bachelor of Nautical Science prepares students for a career as a deck officer in the merchant navy, covering navigation, seamanship, meteorology, and maritime law. The programme is aligned with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) requirements. Graduates are equipped to operate and manage vessels on South African and international waters.

Career Prospects

  • Deck Officer or Officer of the Watch on commercial vessels operating along South Africa’s coastline and internationally, responsible for safe navigation and vessel operations.
  • Ship’s Master or Captain, commanding merchant vessels and overseeing all operations, safety, and crew management on South African and global shipping routes.
  • Harbour Master or Port Operations Manager, working with entities such as Transnet National Ports Authority to manage vessel traffic and port safety in South African harbours.
  • Maritime Safety Inspector with SAMSA, ensuring that vessels operating in South African waters comply with national and international safety regulations.
  • Nautical Lecturer or Maritime Trainer at a South African maritime institution or TVET college, educating the next generation of seafarers and deck officers.
