The Bachelor of Oral Hygiene at the University of Pretoria is a three-year degree in the Faculty of Health Sciences that qualifies graduates to practise as oral hygienists — registered oral health professionals who work alongside dentists to prevent and treat gum disease, remove calculus, apply fluoride treatments, and educate patients on oral hygiene practices. Oral hygienists play a critical role in preventive oral healthcare, reducing the burden of dental disease through targeted patient education and clinical intervention. The programme includes extensive clinical training in UP's dental clinics and affiliated facilities. Graduates register with the HPCSA and can work independently in the areas of their scope of practice or as part of a dental team in private or public healthcare settings.
