Details

The Bachelor of Laws Extended Curriculum Programme at the University of Limpopo is a five-year extended version of the LLB degree, designed to give students who narrowly miss the standard LLB entry requirements the additional academic preparation needed to succeed in legal studies. Students complete an extended first year with foundational academic and legal literacy support before progressing into the full LLB curriculum covering constitutional law, criminal law, contract law, property law, evidence, and human rights law. UL's School of Law hosts the Ismael Mahomed Centre for Human and People's Rights, providing students with exposure to public interest litigation and the transformative potential of law in addressing inequality in South Africa.

Career Prospects

Attorney – Admitted to practise law after completing articles of clerkship, advising clients on legal matters and representing them in litigation through private practice, Legal Aid South Africa, or corporate legal departments.
State Advocate / Prosecutor – Represents the state in criminal prosecutions through the National Prosecuting Authority, a constitutionally mandated institution central to the rule of law in South Africa.
Legal Advisor – Provides in-house legal counsel to corporations, government departments, and NGOs on contracts, regulatory compliance, and dispute resolution across South Africa’s public and private sectors.
Magistrate – Adjudicates criminal and civil matters at district and regional court level after joining the magistracy through the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development.
Human Rights and Public Interest Lawyer – Litigates for constitutional rights and access to justice through law clinics, the South African Human Rights Commission, and public interest law organisations such as the Centre for Applied Legal Studies.
