Overview/Details

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) ERD External Bursary Scheme funds undergraduate students entering their first year of study in 2027 in the fields of economics, economics and econometrics, economics and mathematical statistics, and economic science.

The SARB is South Africa’s central bank, responsible for price stability, financial stability, regulation of the financial sector, and management of the national banking system. Its Economic Research Department, in collaboration with the SARB Academy, administers this competitive bursary programme annually.

Bursaries are awarded to students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds who demonstrate strong academic performance. Successful recipients will be required to sign a bursary agreement with the SARB and may be called for an interview as part of the selection process.

Requirements

  • Hold provisional acceptance into an undergraduate degree in economics, economics and econometrics, economics and mathematical statistics, or economic science at a recognised South African institution.
  • Have achieved an average of 70% or above in your current year of study, including a minimum of 70% in both English and Mathematics.
  • Be under 30 years of age at time of application.
  • Demonstrate financial need — unable to fund university studies without a bursary.
