The DSAC invites applications for bursaries for the 2025 academic year. These bursaries support undergraduate and postgraduate studies in heritage-related programmes, specifically in the following fields:

  • Anthropology (preferably Postgraduates specialising in Forensics)
  • Archaeology (preferably Postgraduates specialising in Bioarchaeology)
  • Geography and Geomatic Sciences (preferably Postgraduates specialising in Cartography and GIS)
  • Archives and Records Management
  • Library and Information Sciences
  • Conservation of the Built Environment (including preventive conservation, not individual courses)
  • Heritage and Museum Studies
  • Palaeontology
  • Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) or courses promoting S.A. Living Heritage
  • History
  • Digitisation of Heritage Resources

The bursary covers up to R110 000 per student, allocated directly to the higher learning institution, and includes:

  • Full tuition fees.
  • Full cost of prescribed books.
  • Electronic devices: up to R10 000 (with 3 receipts/invoices).
  • Accommodation: up to R50 000 (if applicable).
  • Meals: up to R18 500 (if applicable).
  • Transport: up to R10 000 (if applicable).

Requirements

  • Be a South African citizen.
  • Be 40 years old or younger.
  • Have completed Matric or be in Matric in 2024.
  • Be studying or planning to study for an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in one of the listed fields.
  • Be registered or provisionally accepted at an institution accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Training.
  • Have a strong academic record.
  • Not be employed full-time with a salary exceeding R130 000.
  • Not be receiving other bursary funding.

Required Supporting Documents (certified copies):

  • ID document.
  • Matric certificate or latest results.
  • Most recent academic record (if applicable).
  • Proof of provisional acceptance at a university.
  • Postgraduate students: supervisor’s progress report (on university letterhead, if applicable).
