Details

The Bachelor of Sports Science at the University of Pretoria is a three-year degree in the Faculty of Health Sciences that trains students in the scientific principles underlying human movement, exercise physiology, sports psychology, sports nutrition, biomechanics, and sports management. Students develop the knowledge and skills to optimise athletic performance, prevent injuries, promote physical activity, and manage sport organisations — reflecting South Africa's growing sport science sector and the country's national investment in high-performance sport through the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC). UP's sport science programme has strong links with the High Performance Centre, Tuks Athletics Club, and the Springboks training environment, providing students with exceptional practical exposure to elite sport.

Admission requirements: English (Home or First Additional Language): Level 5 (60-69%); Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy: Level 4 (50-59%); APS: 30 (excluding Life Orientation).

Career Prospects

Sport Scientist – Monitor and optimise athlete performance, training loads, and recovery for South African high-performance sport programmes including provincial academies, national federations, and Olympic teams.
Biokineticist (pathway) – Qualify as a registered Biokineticist with the Biokinetics Association of South Africa (BASA) after completing a Masters degree, providing exercise rehabilitation and health services.
Strength and Conditioning Coach – Design and implement physical conditioning programmes for South African professional sports teams, academies, or individual athletes across multiple codes.
Sport Physiologist – Conduct physiological testing, fitness assessments, and performance monitoring for South African athletes and sports organisations.
