The Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) at the University of Pretoria is a six-year professional medical degree that qualifies graduates to practise as medical doctors in South Africa and to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Students are trained in the basic medical sciences, clinical medicine, surgery, obstetrics, paediatrics, psychiatry, and community health — with significant time spent in clinical training at Kalafong Hospital, Steve Biko Academic Hospital, and other teaching hospitals in Tshwane. UP's MBChB graduates emerge equipped to practise across all spheres of medicine and to contribute to addressing South Africa's significant burden of disease, including HIV, tuberculosis, non-communicable diseases, and trauma. The programme is highly selective with intense academic and clinical demands.
Admission requirements: English (Home or First Additional Language): Level 5 (60-69%); Mathematics: Level 6 (70-79%); Physical Science: Level 6 (70-79%); Life Sciences: Level 6 (70-79%); APS: 35 (excluding Life Orientation). A mandatory NBT must be written. Selection is based on academic performance, NBT results, and a structured interview.
