The Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy at Wits is a four-year professional degree training students to assess and treat movement dysfunction caused by injury, disease, or disability. All applicants must write the National Benchmark Tests and complete a minimum of 16 hours of job shadowing with a physiotherapist. Students develop clinical skills in musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiopulmonary, and paediatric physiotherapy through academic study and supervised clinical placements at major Johannesburg hospitals. South Africa faces a critical shortage of physiotherapists in the public sector — particularly in rural areas — and Wits graduates play an important role in addressing this need through community service placements and public sector careers.

Sports Physiotherapist – Provides injury prevention, assessment, and rehabilitation services to South African athletes and sports teams including professional rugby, cricket, and soccer organisations.
ICU Physiotherapist – Manages respiratory function and mobility for critically ill patients in South African intensive care units, providing chest physiotherapy and early rehabilitation.
Community Physiotherapist – Delivers community-based rehabilitation services in South African rural areas and townships, addressing the lack of access to physiotherapy in under-resourced communities.
