The Bachelor of Mine Surveying (BMS) at UJ is a professional degree that develops the spatial measurement and mapping competencies required to survey and manage underground and surface mining environments safely and accurately. Students engage with surveying instrumentation, mine planning software, rock mechanics, mine legislation, and geospatial information systems — preparing graduates for registration as Professional Mine Surveyors under the Mine Health and Safety Act. Mine surveyors play a critical safety and regulatory role in South Africa's gold, platinum, and coal mining operations.
