The Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Zululand is a four-year professional degree accredited by the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP), preparing graduates for registered social work practice. The programme develops competencies in individual counselling, family therapy, group work, community development, child protection, and social policy — aligned with the profound social challenges facing South Africa including poverty, gender-based violence, substance abuse, and the needs of orphans and vulnerable children. Social Worker – Provide counselling, case management, and advocacy for individuals, families, and communities experiencing poverty, abuse, or social exclusion in KwaZulu-Natal.
Child Protection Officer – Investigate and respond to child abuse, neglect, and exploitation through the Department of Social Development or child welfare NGOs.
Community Development Worker – Facilitate participatory development processes that empower rural and township communities to address their own social and economic challenges.
School Social Worker – Support learner wellbeing, address attendance and behavioural challenges, and connect families with social services through school-based social work.
NGO Programme Manager – Lead social development programmes addressing gender-based violence, substance dependency, or youth empowerment for welfare organisations.
