The Bachelor of Science in Astronomy and Astrophysics at Wits trains students in the physics of stars, galaxies, and the universe, combining theoretical astrophysics with observational astronomy. All applicants must write the National Benchmark Tests. South Africa is rapidly becoming a global astronomy hub — home to the MeerKAT radio telescope, the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), and as the joint host of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) — creating world-class research opportunities for Wits astronomy graduates. The programme provides a strong foundation in physics and mathematics alongside astronomy-specific courses, preparing students for postgraduate research and careers in both astronomy and data-intensive science.

Astronomer / Astrophysicist – Conducts cutting-edge research on galaxies, black holes, and cosmic phenomena using South Africa’s MeerKAT and SKA telescopes, based at SARAO or partnering international observatories.
Data Scientist (SKA) – Processes and analyses massive datasets generated by the Square Kilometre Array and MeerKAT, applying machine learning and signal processing to astronomical data at the IDIA data-intensive research facility.
Space Technology Engineer – Develops satellite technologies, space-based sensors, and payload systems for South Africa’s growing space sector through the South African National Space Agency (SANSA).
Physics Educator – Teaches physics and astronomy at South African universities, schools, and public outreach programmes, inspiring the next generation of scientists through South Africa’s world-class astronomy assets.
Geophysicist – Applies physics principles to Earth science problems including seismic monitoring, mineral exploration, and environmental geophysics for South African mining and energy companies.
