The Bachelor of Social Work at UJ is a four-year professional degree that prepares students for registered practice as social workers in South Africa. The programme is offered at NQF Level 8 and is accredited by the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP). Students develop competencies in individual counselling, family therapy, group work, community development, social policy analysis, and advocacy for vulnerable populations.
South Africa's complex social landscape — marked by inequality, unemployment, trauma, and the aftermath of apartheid — creates sustained demand for qualified social workers. Graduates are employed in government departments, NGOs, hospitals, schools, correctional services, and private practice. The degree also provides access to postgraduate study in social work and community development.
Admission requires a minimum APS of 31 (APK campus) or 30 (SWC campus), excluding Life Orientation, and at least 60% in English. NCV applicants are not considered. Selection is based on academic merit.
