Details

The Bachelor of Social Work at UCT is a four-year professional degree that prepares graduates to be agents of social change in South Africa's most vulnerable communities. Social workers at UCT are trained to engage with individuals, families, and communities experiencing poverty, gender-based violence, substance abuse, child abuse, mental illness, and displacement — while also engaging with the systemic and policy causes of these challenges. The degree enables registration as a professional social worker with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) and qualifies graduates for government bursaries through the Department of Social Development. UCT's programme places a strong emphasis on social justice, anti-oppressive practice, and community-led development, and applicants may be required to attend an admissions interview. Intake is limited to 80 students annually.
