The Bachelor of Music at UCT is a four-year specialist degree offered by the South African College of Music (SACM), one of Africa's foremost conservatoires with a history spanning more than a century. SACM offers unmatched breadth of musical training on the continent, with streams in African Music Performance, Classical Performance, Classical Composition, Jazz Studies, Music Technology, Opera, and a General stream — and instruments ranging from orchestral strings, winds, and brass to piano, organ, voice, African percussion, and jazz instruments. Students participate in SACM's renowned orchestras, choirs, wind ensembles, jazz big band, and opera school, performing regularly at professional venues across Cape Town. An audition, music theory test, and interview are the primary admission criteria. The Diploma in Music Performance (a three-year alternative) is also available for students who meet the minimum requirements but do not receive an offer for the degree.
