The Higher Certificate in Dental Assisting at DUT is a one-year programme at ML Sultan Campus that trains students as clinical dental assistants registered with the HPCSA. Dental assistants provide critical support in dental procedures — from infection control and instrument sterilisation to chair-side assistance and dental practice management. With the shortage of dental healthcare workers in South Africa, particularly in underserved communities, dental assisting offers stable employment opportunities in private practices, government hospitals, and the South African military health service.
