The Bachelor of Health Sciences in Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics at DUT prepares graduates to design, manufacture, and fit orthotic devices (splints and braces) and prosthetic limbs for patients with physical disabilities — a profession with exceptionally high demand in South Africa. Registered with the HPCSA, graduates work independently or within rehabilitation teams alongside surgeons, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists. The four-year programme combines clinical biomechanics, materials science, anatomy, and manufacturing skills with significant patient-centred practical experience.

Biomechanics Specialist – Apply understanding of human movement to optimise orthotic and prosthetic design for functional outcomes.
Clinical Researcher – Contribute to research in prosthetics and orthotics technology, materials, and clinical outcomes at universities and research institutions.
Private Practice Owner – Establish and manage an independent O&P practice serving patients in KZN or nationally with custom rehabilitative devices.
