Life Orientation and APS at UJ

When applying to the University of Johannesburg (UJ), your Admission Point Score (APS) is a central part of the admissions process. The APS is calculated from your National Senior Certificate (NSC) results and is used to assess whether you qualify for your chosen programme. One of the most common questions applicants ask is whether Life Orientation counts towards the APS at UJ.

At UJ, Life Orientation is not included in the APS calculation. Even though it is a compulsory subject in high school and provides important life skills, it does not contribute to your admission points.

How APS is Calculated at UJ

UJ calculates your APS using your six best subjects, excluding Life Orientation. This means:

  • Core subjects such as Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Accounting, Life Sciences, Business Studies, Economics, or Languages will determine your APS.
  • Each faculty sets its own minimum APS and specific subject requirements, so it is important to check the entry criteria for the programme you are interested in.

What This Means for Applicants

When applying to UJ:

  • Do not include Life Orientation when calculating your APS.
  • Focus on achieving strong results in your core subjects, as these will determine your admission eligibility.
  • Make sure you meet both the minimum APS and the subject-specific requirements for the qualification you want to study.
