The Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment is offering bursaries for full-time students in the 2025 academic year. These bursaries provide financial assistance to students pursuing qualifications in a variety of environmentally focused fields. The initiative aims to support studies in areas such as biodiversity and conservation, chemicals and waste management, climate change and air quality management, environmental programs, forestry management, fisheries management, regulatory compliance, and oceans and coasts.

The bursaries are intended to foster skills development and address critical needs within South Africa’s environmental sectors. Through this program, the Department seeks to encourage the participation of students in key areas related to environmental sustainability, conservation, and the management of natural resources.

The bursary offers financial support, up to a maximum of R50,000.00, for students studying these relevant disciplines. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to the country’s environmental goals through their chosen fields of study.

How to apply

To apply for the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment bursary, applicants must follow these steps:

1. Complete the Application Form: Applicants need to fill out the prescribed bursary application form.
2. Prepare Supporting Documents: The following documents must accompany the application:
   • A motivation letter explaining why the bursary should be awarded.
   • Certified copies of qualifications and recent academic records.
   • Certified copies of the applicant’s ID as well as those of both parents or guardian.
   • Proof of registration (if already enrolled in a higher education institution).
   • Latest Grade 12 results (if currently in high school).
   • Proof of parents’ or guardian’s income.
   • Proof if parents are deceased.
   • Affidavit if parents are not working.
