Overview/Details

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program awards South African university graduates scholarships to pursue postgraduate studies in any field at any university in the United States for the 2027-2028 academic year. Established in 1946 as a U.S. cultural exchange initiative, the Fulbright Program is one of the most prestigious international scholarship programs globally, fostering intercultural relations and academic excellence between the United States and partner countries.

South African citizens and permanent residents may apply for three distinct opportunities: Visiting Student Researcher positions for current PhD candidates to conduct one year of research at a U.S. university, Master’s degree funding, or Doctoral degree funding. The program excludes MBA programs and medical or veterinary studies requiring clinical patient contact.

Benefits include full tuition coverage, living allowance, placement at a U.S. host university, J-1 visa sponsorship, international travel and health insurance, medical clearance, visa application fees, round-trip transportation between South Africa and the United States, and a settling-in allowance upon arrival.
