The Amazon Recruitment Bursary supports South African undergraduate students in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Software Engineering who are from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and are pursuing a career as a Software Development Engineer (SDE).
Launched in 2018 by Amazon Development Centre, the bursary covers tuition fees, accommodation, subsistence, stationery and books, a personal computer, and transport costs (all capped).
Beyond funding, successful applicants complete a paid Amazon internship during their summer vacation, during which they are assessed for a full-time permanent SDE role to begin upon graduation. Interns work on real-world distributed systems, data mining, automation, optimization, scalability, and security challenges.
To qualify for 100% of bursary funding, award recipients must be open to accepting a full-time permanent position with Amazon for a duration equal to the years of bursary received, contingent on a job offer following the internship assessment.
