The MQA Bursary Scheme supports South African students pursuing qualifications aligned with the mining and minerals sector. For the 2026 academic year, 430 bursaries are available for unemployed learners and individuals employed in the mining sector. The bursary covers full tuition, registration fees, residence or private accommodation, books, meals, and allowances.

The scheme focuses on qualifications critical to the sector and promotes transformation by prioritizing historically disadvantaged individuals, female candidates, people with disabilities, rural applicants, and those in financial need.

Universities & Universities of Technology:

  • Metallurgical, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, and Industrial Engineering
  • Mining Engineering, Geology, Mine Surveying
  • Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Science/Management
  • Occupational Hygiene/Health/Safety/Medicine
  • Jewellery Design and Manufacturing
  • Electromechanical Engineering
  • Operations and Quality Management

TVET Colleges:

  • Boilermaker, Fitter and Turner, Millwright, Mechanic (Diesel & Automotive)
  • Electrician, Plumber, Pipe Fitter, Welder, Carpenter, and Joiner
  • Instrumentation Mechanic, Mechatronics, Bricklayer, Rigger Ropesman

Note: 20% of bursaries may be allocated to qualifications outside this list at MQA’s discretion.

Requirements

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must be unemployed at the time of application and remain unemployed during the study period
  • Grade 12 certificate or current Grade 11 results for high school learners
  • Acceptance or registration at a public university, TVET college, or university of technology
  • Total household income must not exceed R600,000 per annum
  • Preference given to:
    • Historically Disadvantaged Individuals (HDIs)
    • Female applicants
    • People with disabilities
    • Rural community residents
    • Those studying on the MQA Sectoral Priority Occupations Interventions (SPOI) list
