SASSETA invites applications for the Discretionary Grant Bursary for unemployed youth aged 18–35 who are accepted or registered at public tertiary institutions in South Africa. This bursary prioritises fields aligned with occupations in high demand and those in SASSETA’s Sector Skills Plan.

Bursary Covers:

  • Registration fees
  • Tuition
  • Books
  • Accommodation and meals (on or off-campus)
  • Learning materials (e.g. laptop)
  • Travel costs (where applicable)
  • Up to R80,000 per academic year per student for full-time studies
  • R60,000 max for employed learners (where applicable)

Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be South African citizens aged 18–35
  • Be unemployed at the time of application
  • Be registered or accepted to study at a public university, TVET College, or University of Technology
  • Be studying full-time or distance learning, where the programme is not offered at public institutions
  • Not already receive funding from NSFAS or any other bursary programme

Required Documents:

  • Certified copy of ID (not older than 6 months)
  • Certified copy of matric/last qualification results
  • 2026 acceptance or proof of registration
  • Certified copy of parent/guardian ID
  • Affidavit of household income and employment status

Qualifying Fields of Study Include:

  1. LLB
  2. Veterinary Science
  3. STEM Qualifications (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)
  4. Other qualifications aligned with occupations in high demand and the SASSETA Sector Skills Plan

Additional Notes:

  • Preference given to applicants from the missing middle (R350,000.01–R600,000) and poor households (up to R350,000)
  • Applicants will be required to sign a bursary agreement if selected
  • Sworn affidavit confirming unemployment and lack of other funding required
  • Feedback will be sent within 90 days of the closing date
  • Limited bursary slots available
