Overview/Details

The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme supports South African students pursuing teaching qualifications to address teacher shortages. It funds tuition, accommodation, meals, learning materials, and a living allowance. Applicants must be under 30 years old, have strong academic performance, and specialise in priority teaching subjects like Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Indigenous Languages. Recipients must teach at public schools each year they receive the bursary. Applications open annually from 1 October, and only online submissions are accepted.

The bursary covers:

  • Tuition fees.
  • Accommodation and meals.
  • Learning materials.
  • A small living allowance.

 

Requirements

  • Age: First-year applicants must be under 30 years of age.
  • South African Citizenship: Applicants must hold a valid South African ID card.
  • Police Clearance:
    • Must have no criminal record.
    • If you have a record older than 10 years, you can apply for expungement.
    • Applicants listed in the National Registers for Sexual or Child Offenders are not eligible.
  • Academic Requirements:
    • A matric pass with a bachelor’s endorsement.
    • Level 4 (50%+) in two teaching subjects relevant to the programme.
    • Additional subject-specific requirements for each teaching phase (e.g., Mathematics, Languages).
  • Programmes Funded:
    • Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degrees in Foundation, Intermediate, Senior, and FET Phases.
    • Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Care and Education (B-ECCE).
  • Exclusions:
    • PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education).
    • Extended programmes (e.g., Honours, Master’s, Doctoral).
    • Subjects identified as oversupplied (e.g., History, Geography, Business Studies).
    • Low-uptake subjects (e.g., Music, Dance, Art).
