The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) provides bursaries to financially disadvantaged students from rural areas. The bursary supports undergraduate students pursuing studies in mining and energy-related fields, reflecting the DMRE’s mission to ensure secure and sustainable access to energy and mineral resources for socio-economic development.

The bursary is available for the following undergraduate programmes:

  • Bachelor of Science (Physics and Chemistry)
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current)
  • Electro-Mechanical Engineering
  • Environmental Health and Management
  • Geology
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Information and Communication Technology
  • Materials Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mechatronics Engineering
  • Metallurgical Engineering (Extractive)
  • Mining Engineering
  • Mining Survey
  • Nuclear Engineering
  • Rock Engineering

Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Must be a South African citizen.
  • Must NOT be older than 35 years old.
  • Currently in Matric (2024) or have completed Matric.
  • Achieved a minimum of level 6 in pure Mathematics and Science in Matric.
  • Intending to study full-time in one of the listed fields (postgraduate studies are excluded).
  • Studying or accepted/registered at a recognised University or University of Technology in South Africa.
  • Must be in financial need and from a disadvantaged social background (preferably rural areas).
  • Must be currently unemployed.
  • Preference will be given to:
    • First-year students.
    • Female students.
    • Students with disabilities.

Supporting Documents

The following documents must be included with your application:

  • Certified copy of ID document.
  • Certified copy of Matric certificate or latest results.
  • Certified copy of the latest academic transcript, if applicable.
  • Proof of tertiary registration or acceptance (on official letterhead).
  • Certified copies of parents’ or guardians’ ID documents.
  • Certified copy of parents’ death certificates (if applicable).
  • Affidavit if one or both parents are unknown.
  • Parents’ or guardians’ proof of income (recent payslips or affidavit if unemployed).
  • Proof of residence (municipal bill, tribal authority letter, or affidavit).
  • Motivational letter supporting your application.

Note: Matric students must submit their final results and acceptance letters within the first week of the release of Matric results.

Selection Process

  • Shortlisted candidates will be notified by 31 January 2025.
  • Selection will be based on academic performance and financial need.
  • The DMRE reserves the right not to award a bursary if no suitable candidate is found.
