Overview/Details

The Hortgro Bursary Programme supports students pursuing careers in the deciduous fruit industry, including agricultural sciences, horticulture, business management, and environmental sustainability. Over the past decade, Hortgro has invested more than R55 million in bursaries, funding 704 students to develop the next generation of industry leaders and researchers.

Recipients receive full or partial tuition coverage, a stipend for study-related expenses, and access to practical experience through internships and mentorships with leading industry professionals. Bursary holders gain entry to Hortgro’s network of experts, providing valuable industry insights and career connections.

The programme includes career development opportunities such as work-integrated learning, leadership training, exposure to industry facilities, and personalized mentorship throughout your studies. Hortgro focuses on scarce and critical skills to advance sustainability, innovation, and global competitiveness in deciduous fruit production.

 

Requirements

  • South African citizenship
  • Currently enrolled in or applying to undergraduate or postgraduate programs
  • Studying fields related to the deciduous fruit industry: Agricultural Economics, Horticulture (Production/Post-harvest), Agricultural Biotechnology, Soil and Water Science, Marketing, Agricultural Science, Project Management, Entomology, Agri-Management, Microbiology, or Plant Pathology
  • Demonstrated academic excellence
  • Passion for the agricultural sector and deciduous fruit industry
  • Potential for future contributions to the sector
  • Commitment to good behavior throughout studies
  • Willingness to provide quarterly updates on wellbeing and academic progress
  • Ability to submit semester results and attend Hortgro functions
