Overview/Details

The Sasol Bursary Programme funds full-time undergraduate studies in Engineering and Science at approved South African public universities, targeting high-performing South African citizens pursuing degrees for the 2027 academic year. The programme covers tuition and provides a living allowance, along with psychosocial support throughout the study period.

Fields of study include Chemical Engineering, Chemistry (Honours required), Civil Engineering, Data Science (Computer Science, Mathematics, Operations Research, or Statistics), Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Geology (Honours required), Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering/Metallurgy (Honours required), and Mine Surveying (University of Johannesburg only).

Postgraduate bursaries (M.Sc., M.Eng., Ph.D.) are also available in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, supporting research in areas such as Fluid Dynamics, Reactor Technology, Separation Technology, Thermodynamics, Catalysis, Polymer Science, Environmental Science, Cyber Security, and Data Science, aligned with energy and circular economy transition goals.

This is a performance-based programme with a workback and/or payback obligation. Successful graduates may be employed within the Sasol Group through its Graduate Development Programme.

Requirements

  • Be a South African citizen by birth with a valid South African ID document or card.
  • Be permanently resident in South Africa.
  • Be registered or intending to register for full-time undergraduate degree studies (not diplomas) at a Sasol-approved public South African university or University of Technology in 2027. UNISA and distance-learning institutions are not accepted.
  • Be under the age of 30 at the time of application.
  • Submit only one application per student.
  • Apply for a single, standard degree — dual, combined, or hybrid degrees (e.g. B.Sc. Chemistry with Chemical Engineering, B.Eng. Mechatronics) are not eligible.
  • Technical Mathematics and Mathematics Literacy are not accepted — applicants must have standard Mathematics.
  • Minimum academic requirements for B.Eng. and B.Sc.Eng: Mathematics Level 6 (70–79%); Physical Science Level 6 (70–79%); English First Additional or Home Language Level 5 (60–69%), or English Second Additional Language Level 4 (50–59%).
  • Minimum academic requirements for B.Eng. Tech. (Mine Surveying only): Mathematics Level 5 (60–69%); Physical Science Level 5 (60–69%); English First Additional or Home Language Level 5 (60–69%), or English Second Additional Language Level 4 (50–59%).
  • First-year applicants must submit Grade 11 or Grade 12 results. Students in second, third, or fourth year must submit results from their previous academic year, with a minimum average of 60% across all modules.
  • Provide a full academic record from the start of studies to present, plus proof of registration for the current year if applicable.
  • Provide proof of permanent home residence (municipality and district).
  • Be willing and available to complete online psychometric assessments as part of the selection process.
  • All studies must be completable within a maximum of five years from start to completion date.
  • For postgraduate applicants: No formal project proposal is required at application stage, but applicants must be able to discuss potential research topics supporting Sasol’s sustainability and energy transition objectives.
