Life Orientation and APS at UCT

If you are applying to the University of Cape Town (UCT), one of the key elements of your application is the Admission Point Score (APS). This score is based on your school results and helps determine whether you qualify for your chosen programme. A common question from applicants is whether Life Orientation is part of the APS at UCT.

At UCT, Life Orientation is not included in the APS calculation. Although it is a compulsory subject in high school and develops essential life skills, it does not count toward the admission points used for selection.

How APS is Calculated at UCT

UCT calculates APS using your six best subjects, excluding Life Orientation. This means that:

  • Core subjects such as Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Accounting, Life Sciences, Economics, or Languages are considered.
  • Each faculty and programme has its own APS minimums and subject-specific requirements. Applicants must check these carefully to ensure they meet the entry requirements.

What This Means for Applicants

When applying to UCT:

  • Do not include Life Orientation in your APS calculation.
  • Focus on your core academic subjects, as they will determine your eligibility for admission.
  • Always verify the APS and subject requirements for the specific qualification you wish to study.
