Life Orientation and APS at RU

If you are applying to Rhodes University (RU), one of the key elements in the admission process is your Admission Point Score (APS). This score is calculated from your school results and helps determine whether you qualify for your chosen programme. Many learners ask whether Life Orientation contributes to the APS at RU.

At RU, Life Orientation is not included when calculating APS. Even though it is a compulsory subject in high school and helps equip students with important skills, it does not count toward the admission points for university entry.

How APS is Calculated at RU

Rhodes University calculates your APS using your six best subjects, excluding Life Orientation. This means that:

  • Subjects such as Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Accounting, Economics, History, or Languages are used in your APS.
  • The exact subject requirements differ depending on the faculty and programme you are applying for, so always check the detailed admission requirements.

What This Means for Applicants

When preparing your RU application:

  • Do not include Life Orientation in your APS calculation.
  • Focus on excelling in your core academic subjects, as these will determine whether you meet the admission requirements.
  • Make sure you also meet subject-specific requirements, as some programmes prioritise certain subjects.
