The Extended Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences at NWU is a four-year programme that opens the door to environmental science study for students from under-resourced schooling backgrounds who need additional academic preparation. The extended first year strengthens foundational skills in physical and life sciences before students progress into the full Environmental Sciences curriculum — examining the interactions between geological, biological, chemical, and geographic systems in South Africa's diverse natural environment. The programme reflects NWU's commitment to broadening participation in environmental science, a field critical to addressing South Africa's most pressing challenges including water scarcity, land degradation, mining impacts, and climate adaptation. Graduates earn a full BSc and are equipped for careers in environmental consulting, conservation, and government science.
