The Extended Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences at NWU is a four-year programme that provides an extended academic pathway into life science study for students who show scientific potential but need extra preparation for degree-level work. The first year builds foundational skills in biology, chemistry, and academic English before students enter the full Biological Sciences curriculum — studying two complementary disciplines from botany, zoology, microbiology, biochemistry, and physiology. This programme is particularly valuable in the North West Province, where access to quality schooling is often limited, and the extended route has enabled many students to succeed in science careers who would otherwise have been excluded. Graduates earn a full BSc and are prepared for careers in research, conservation, biotechnology, and health sciences across South Africa.
