The Diploma in Animal Health at NWU's Mahikeng campus is a three-year qualification that trains students in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of animal diseases under the supervision of a veterinarian, as well as animal production and welfare management. Students develop practical skills in livestock health monitoring, vaccination, parasite control, and disease surveillance — essential competencies for supporting South Africa's agricultural sector, particularly in the communal and smallholder farming communities prevalent in the North West Province. The programme directly addresses South Africa's critical need for para-veterinary professionals to support livestock farmers who lack access to full veterinary services. Graduates are eligible for registration as Animal Health Technicians with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC).
