The Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences at Wits is a three-year degree providing a broad foundation in the life sciences, with specialisations available in biodiversity, ecology and conservation, organismal biology, applied bioinformatics, biochemistry and cell biology, genetics and developmental biology, and microbiology and biotechnology. All applicants must write the National Benchmark Tests. South Africa is a megadiverse country — one of the world's 17 biodiversity hotspots — and Wits biological sciences graduates contribute to conservation, environmental management, biotechnology, and medical research. The programme draws on Wits's rich research infrastructure including the Life Sciences Museum and Origins Centre.

Conservation Scientist – Manages and researches biodiversity in South Africa’s national parks, game reserves, and protected areas, working for SANParks, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, and conservation NGOs.
Environmental Consultant – Conducts biodiversity assessments, impact studies, and environmental management programmes for South African mining, infrastructure, and property development projects.
Biotechnology Researcher – Develops new biological products and processes for South African pharmaceutical, agricultural, and industrial applications at private companies and the CSIR.
Wildlife Veterinarian (Entry Pathway) – Provides foundational biological sciences knowledge needed to enter veterinary or wildlife management postgraduate programmes in South Africa.
Museum and Science Curator – Manages biological collections and public education programmes for South African museums and research institutions including the Wits Life Sciences Museum and Iziko.
